The Beautiful Sydney Opera House
While most of Australia’s beauty lies in its natural wonders, the man-made Sydney Opera House is also a sight to behold. From 233 designs that were submitted for the Opera House international design competition, Jørn Utzon, a Danish architect’s unique clamshell design was chosen as the winner.
Construction started in 1959 and was completed in 1973 and while the original cost estimate was $7 million, the final ended up being a whopping $102 million. Worth every penny, wouldn’t you agree? More than 10.9 million tourists visit the Opera House every year and it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007.
