Researchers working in a small city in Uttarakhand, India have discovered the remains of what appears to be a mysterious dinosaur with flesh still clinging on its bones. An electrician cleaning out a sub-station that had not been touched in over 35 years first found the odd creature. Soon after, scientists were alerted to the discovery, and the bones were sent out for analysis. Little is known about the remains, but researchers hope carbon dating will help reveal their age.
Though they are not sure what the remains are from, scientists generally agree it is impossible for the animal to be a dinosaur. That is because flightless dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago, and it would have been impossible for soft tissues like flesh to exist for that long. However, no definitive conclusions can be made until scientific analysis has been completed.
“It looks like a dinosaur, but we can’t say anything until all the tests are done,” said Parag Madhukar Dhakate, a Conservator with the Indian Forest Service, according to International Business Times.
The finding is baffling researchers because, despite all common sense, it does appear to resemble a dinosaur from the suborder theropoda. However, there is no way a dinosaur skeleton could still exist in such a good condition without being in a fossilized state.
“The only even slightly possible way is it was chemically preserved to store it in a museum,” explained Aaryan Kumar, a PhD student in Paleontology from Delhi University, according to Express UK. “But if that was the case, how did it end up here?”
The specimen has now been sent out for further historical analysis. Some people believe it may be a distorted animal fetus, but it will likely continue to be a mystery for quite some time.
