Unlike the title suggests, the film’s protagonists are not witches. Strange, right? The film follows the Puritan family, who get dealt one unlucky hand after the other. First, they are met with dealing with madness and then with death. But the culprit? Their Billy goat, Black Phillip. Again, not a witch.
So as it turns out, the Billy goat was actually Satan reincarnated – an interesting choice of a host body, Satan. The audience was actually made aware of this when the twins were singing a song dedicated to Black Phillip, “Black Phillip, Black Phillip, we are ye servants, we are ye men. Black Phillip eats the lions from the lions’ den.” It’s not the clearest Easter egg, but it’s also not bad for a movie about Satanic goat.
