#26: A World of Sound
If you’ve ever seen the original Jurassic Park, you know that the velociraptors are the true stars of the film. But do you know who or what made their iconic dino sounds? The sound designers sourced the velociraptor sounds from many unexpected animals, including an X-rated tortoise. The barking sound of the velociraptors talking to each other is actually the sound of two tortoises mating.
We did not need to know that. But now that we do, we might as well keep going with the sound analysis. Other animal sounds were layered on top of the tortoise mating call to create a unique, realistic dino sound. Technicians layered samples from dolphins, geese, African cranes, and even human vocals to create the iconic velociraptor sound we know and love today.
