A horrible mistake
Cargo ships tipping over isn’t a common occurrence, but when it happens, there are several things to worry about. The MV Rena, the ship in this picture, was carrying several containers, many of which had hazardous materials inside. As the containers went careening off the side of the ship, so did those hazardous fluids, which would later on create a huge oil slick along the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand.
This unfortunate mistake took place in October 2011, which led to 88 containers getting lost at sea, resulting in New Zealand’s worse oil spill in history. Despite splitting in two, the ship was recovered, repaired, and recommissioned.
