Paying in change isn’t illegal, but it’s incredibly inconvenient to the cashier and everyone in line behind you. If you’re going to pay in change, the unofficial federal law dictates that you must apologize profusely and offer to help count, even though the cashier will say no.
But if you’re a Karen like this person and their friend, you know you’re going to have a bad time. The OP received $17 in change and had to count the coins out one by one. All the while, the customer and their goofy friend were guffawing. It took the cashier six recounts to finally account for every penny, during which the Karen didn’t think the prank was funny any longer.
