How to Protect Yourself from UV Radiation

January 14, 2021 by Veronica Phillips

Sunshine is one of those tricky things in our world. The human body needs sunlight for Vitamin D and other health purposes, but it can be dangerous when we get too much of it. The ultraviolet rates that the sun puts out into our world, reaches our skin, and can cause some major damage.

You’re aware of the dangers of UV radiation at this point, but are you aware of how you can get that sunlight your body needs while protecting yourself from harmful UV rays? Today we’re sharing some tips to help you protect yourself from UV radiation while you’re out there enjoying a fabulous beach day.

You need to protect yourself from UV rays all year round. The sun may not shine brightly in every season, but it’s always up there in the sky putting off UV radiation. There are other forms of UV radiation that people may encounter such as tanning beds, some lasers, some halogen lights, some incandescent lights, and Mercury vapor lighting that’s used in some stadiums and school gyms.

Simple Ways to Protect Yourself

  • Stay in the shade whenever possible, especially during the middle of the day when the sun is shining brightest in the sky.
  • Cover your arms and legs with clothing whenever possible.
  • Consider options to protect your children with proper sunblock lotion that has a high SPF protection.
  • Use a hat with a visor to protect your face by shading it from direct access to the UV rays from the sunshine.
  • Find sunglasses that wrap around your face that help protect your eyes from UVA and UVB rays.
  • Avoid using tanning beds to get your skin tanned. If you must get a tan, use natural sunlight for your tanning sessions.

Most people focus on protecting themselves and their families from UV radiation during the summer season. This is the time of year when more people are outside soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the beach days.

Being able to enjoy the great weather during the summer season is a fabulous freedom we have in this world, but remember to use the proper sunblock lotion and clothing that helps minimize the impact of UV radiation.

Exposure to UV radiation can cause many health conditions, including some cancers! UV radiation exposure can cause premature aging, leathery skin, wrinkles, liver spots, and eye problems.

There are some pros and cons to exposing yourself to UV radiation, but for the most part, we need to protect ourselves from too much exposure. We hope that our list of ways to protect yourself from UV radiation will inspire you to protect yourself in everyday life.
