#35: An A.M. Cassandre Original
Advertising in the 1950s was a completely different beast than it is today. Before the onset of popular advertising that developed in the ‘60s, ads were more tame and kind of hit-or-miss. That’s what makes this 1951 Philips ad so eye-catching and amazing. The company commissioned the famous artist and designer A.M. Cassandre to create this mesmerizing advertisement.

The ad looks more like a piece of art than a television commercial! Television sets were still pretty pricey in the ‘50s. We feel that Philips wanted to create an ad that appealed to upper-class folks who appreciated good design and high-brow art. This ad is a wonderful example of early advertising.
