They can be promoting anything, from cars to electronics, and will try to get you to pay a premium price. The best thing you can do is arm yourself with information by comparing prices online.
Is it unethical for these people to try to squeeze every penny out of your per transaction? Not at all. In fact, they’re trained to do such a thing. But if you’re speaking with a salesperson, whether it be face-to-face or through the phone, you should know your stuff. You’ll most likely get what you want and annoy the salesperson at the same time. It’s a double-win!
