#17: Megan Rapinoe: Reigning Queen of Soccer
Rapinoe has made a name for herself in the world of women’s soccer, and for good reason. She’s known for her quick and crafty playing style and outspoken activism for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights. Rapinoe led her team to gold in the 2012 Games, and the 2015 & 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup competitions. Off the field, Rapinoe is a huge advocate for equal pay and equal rights within women’s soccer and extends her activism beyond her sport.

She is a staunch ally of social justice causes, and was the first white female athlete to kneel in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest of police brutality and injustice. She is also proudly out and an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and causes. She has defended her outspoken stance on social justice by saying, “I don’t think anyone who has ever spoken out, or stood up, or had a brave moment, has regretted it. It’s empowering and confidence-building and inspiring. Not only to other people but to yourself.”
