#9: Annika Sörenstam: A Golfing Great
Annika Sörenstam is considered to be one of the greatest golfers in history. Her resume is impressive, with 90 international tournament wins and 72 Ladies Professional Golf Association tournament wins. Golf is traditionally divided between the sexes, with men and women almost never competing against each other. Sörenstam shattered that division during her career, if only for a little bit.
She participated in the PGA Tour’s 2003 Bank of America Colonial, an event that is historically men-only. She was the first woman to compete alongside her male counterparts since Babe Zaharias Didrickson all the way back in 1945. Although she didn’t make the cut, her participation indicated a small step forward for inclusion and equality in the men’s club of golf.
