#4: Misty Copeland: Ballet Dancer & Philanthropist
Misty Copeland made history when she became the first African American woman to become a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre. She was a ballet prodigy, starting to study ballet at the late age of 13. She has gone on to add author, advocate, and philanthropist to her resume and is a big supporter of diversity and inclusion in her field.
Copeland has spoken openly about being the only Black woman at the American Ballet Theater for many years, and strives to open doors for the younger generations of dancers and athletes. Copeland has inspired many young African American girls to take up ballet and aspire to be a dancer like her. She has also worked with Project Plié to provide opportunities and resources for teachers and programs in diverse communities.
