Turbulent wake
Being several hundred feet in the air gives you the unique opportunity to spy on people below, for good and bad. In this person’s case, they found several watercrafts leaving long trails in their wake. Don’t those trails usually disappear after traveling a hundred feet or so?
Someone helpfully pointed out that this phenomenon is what’s known as a turbulent wake. Basically, the waves produced by the boat were faster than oncoming waves from other directions, allowing them to stay visible for longer as they moved outward. It’s a pretty unique event that only some of the most hardcore wave watchers ever get to notice (yes, wave watching is a thing).
