Suffocate the Flame
Even though you’ve always been taught to throw water onto a flame in order to put it out, there is always an exception to every rule. That even goes for fire safety. When you encounter a grease fire never add water to the mix, as this will only spread the fire, making the situation worse.
Instead, you can add baking soda to the flames in turn absorbing the oil that is causing the fire, or you can suffocate the flame by placing something non-flammable on top of it. The closest and most appropriate item being another pot or pan. Eliminating the oxygen from the fire will put it out quickly.
