Joe Doyle – 1911 ATC T206
Doyle is notable for being the first player in history to hit a home run over Babe Ruth’s head. He was born in Clay Center, Kansas, and was signed by the New York Highlanders (now the Yankees) in 1906. Doyle only played for five years and had an overall ERA of 2.85 out of 75 games started. Unlike the others in this post, Joe Doyle was not a great player. He was simply average. So, why did Joe’s 1911 card sell for $414,750? It was due to a mistake. Take a closer look, and you’ll notice that it says New York’s National League Team rather than the Highlanders…oops!
