Shoeless Joe Jackson – 1909 American Caramel
The first and most famous player to wear #14 is Shoeless Joe “Shoeless Joe” Jackson, who was born Joseph Walker Jackson in 1890. He debuted with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1908 (now the Oakland Athletics). Over his thirteen-year career, Shoeless Joe hit 54 home runs. He received several MVP nominations but never received enough support to win the award.
The card was designed to increase tobacco sales for the American Tobacco Company. This may be the case because of Jackson’s checkered past. He was accused of being a member of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox gambling scandal, which resulted in his baseball career being terminated. A mint condition 1909 $10 US Playing Card has a worth of $660,000.
