Babe Ruth – 1916 Sporting News
Babe Ruth made the cut a second time, as he has done every year since. In 1914, with the Boston Red Sox, he was dubbed King of Crash and played until 1920 before transferring to the New York Yankees. He won seven World Series rings throughout his career (1914-1920), was MVP of 1923, and was elected to the Hall Of Fame in 1936.
Ruth was one of the first five individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame, and he certainly deserves it. His skill was almost superhuman, and spectators were enthralled. He held the all-time homer record until Hank Aaron broke it in 1974. Joe Dungan observed that about Ruth, “To comprehend him, you must comprehend this: He wasn’t human.” This Sporting News card traded for $717,000 in 2016.
