The Chamber Behind Mt. Rushmore
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, located in South Dakota, is one of the most famous and well-known landmarks in the United States. The face of each US president—Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Theodore Roosevelt—is etched onto Mount Rushmore as part of the memorial, which is a large sculpture. Gutzon Borglum was responsible for this famous work.
Most people don’t know that a secret chamber is at the back of Lincoln’s head. Gutzon Borglum made an 18-foot door that opens into open space 74 feet long and 35 feet high. Borglum planned to display America’s most valued possessions in this space, naming it the Hall of Records. Although the chamber contains vital historical records such as the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, it is now closed to the general public, which has fueled many theories. Some people believe the government is hiding something extremely top-secret there, such as proof of extraterrestrial life. Others think that there are hidden riches buried in the area.
