Crachach
The word “crachach” comes from the Welsh language and means “petty gentry; egotistical upstarts, snobs.” It’s a derogatory term for the purported Welsh-speaking network elite that runs Wales’s higher education, media, and arts sectors. This difficult-to-pronounce word is nevertheless well-known to many.
According to the hypothesis, those who are fluent in Welsh and belong to the elite class primarily hold influential positions in sectors such as media, academia, politics, and arts. The phrase has an offensive connotation to specific Welsh speakers. Some authors have labeled it “an attack on Welsh speakers.”
