John Dillinger
Although few people have the level of infamy that earns them the title of “public enemy number one,” John Dillinger certainly did. In the 1930s, Indiana native John Dillinger was sought after for robbing over ten banks and stealing approximately $280,000. Even after being caught, he staged an audacious getaway by creating a wooden gun and deceiving security guards into letting him go. He had surgery on his face to make himself unidentifiable.
Dillinger’s death was unfortunate, but some say the circumstances may have been fishy. He was killed in an alley after the FBI offered a $100,000 reward for his capture. However, due to allegations that the body had brown eyes (although Dillinger is known for having gray eyes), some people think Dillinger was not actually killed in that alley. Furthermore, the corpse exhibited symptoms of diseases that the notoriously elusive thief was not rumored to have had. Consequently, many people think that Dillinger survived well into the 1900s when The Indianapolis Star got a letter appearing to be from him in 1963.
