The Mystery Surrounding the Body of Enoch Lincoln
When an important figure’s body mysteriously vanishes from its tomb, it always sparks discussion and conspiracist beliefs. This is precisely what happened when Enoch Lincoln’s body disappeared in 1826. At the time, he was Maine’s sixth governor and had already determined the location of Maine’s capital city. In New England, he was also known for supporting women’s and black rights.
In 1991, workers discovered that Lincoln’s crypt was empty after he had passed away nearly two centuries prior in 1829. To this day, no one knows what happened to his body, and numerous theories abound. Some people think that state employees might have cleaned up the tomb and forgotten to put his corpse back, while others believe that the governor’s remains were never actually interred there in the first place. No matter the case, Lincoln’s burial site remains a mystery.
