An epidemic
In six years, the number of homeless people in Los Angeles has risen by 75%. Since 2012, the homeless population has grown from 32,000 to 55,000. Experts point to the main reason for this dramatic expansion as a result of many homeless persons who lost jobs during the last financial crisis being unable to bounce back because they compete with a new generation of young professionals.
Mayor Eric Garcetti claims that the city is working on plans to build more portable housing on public land, although there have been no indications of progress thus far.
