Harper Lee
Unlike the other female authors on our list, Harper Lee, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of To Kill a Mockingbird, did not have children or marry throughout her almost nine-decade existence. She was born in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926 and attended an all-female institution in Montgomery. Most people are unaware that Lee wrote just one book between the mid-1950s and 2015 before releasing “Go Set a Watchman” as a spiritual sequel to her best-selling “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Lee’s neighbor and friend Marja Mills wrote “The Mockingbird Next Door: Life with Harper Lee,” a book about the author. She revealed in her book that while Lee had several successful relationships with men, none of them had ever progressed to the stage of marriage. Perhaps Harper, like so many others, was simply too far ahead of her time in terms of views and ideas for any man to handle.
