Greta Garbo
Greta Garbo, born in an era when women were expected to marry young, broke the mold by refusing to do so throughout the 1920s and 1930s, instead choosing to focus on her burgeoning acting career. Ultimately, she decided to live alone after never marrying, though she did have a few notable love interests over the years – one of which was John Gilbert, with whom she often co-starred. While their relationship lasted, it is said that they had a great time together and helped further each other’s careers.
Garbo was in love with Gilbert and asked him to marry her several times, but he always refused. She explained, “I was obsessed with him.” “But I stuck.” I was afraid that if he told me what to do, he’d try to dominate me. “I’ve always wanted to be in command of my life.” After a career that spanned more than 30 years, Garbo died unmarried and childless, leaving her entire fortune to her niece Gray Reisfield. According to recent biographers, Garbo was bisexual or homosexual, and she had several encounters with ladies.
