Pushing Through
Despite grappling with the unfathomable personal loss he endured, Armstrong continued to press onward in his professional journey. Fresh out of college, he embarked on his career as a test pilot at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio, taking to the skies for his maiden flight in March 1955.

By July of that same year, he found himself transferred to the bustling hub of innovation at Southern California’s Edwards Air Force Base High-Speed Flight Station. Then, as the calendar turned to 1956, Armstrong faced an opportunity that would ultimately showcase the same calm, composed demeanor that would later prove invaluable in his role as an astronaut.
