#22: Typists
This profession has not disappeared from the world, but it took on quite a different shape. Typists are still common today in newspapers, courts, publishing houses, and other offices, but perhaps not quite as common as they were during the forties. The name “typists” comes from the tool they used—typewriters.

Typewriters today are collector’s items that are only to be found in secondhand and vintage stores. Today, typists of all kinds use keyboards and computers, but other than that, the idea hasn’t changed much. Compared to other professions on the list, this was one of the best and most well-respected jobs during that time.
