This profession has not passed from the world, but it took on quite a different shape. Typists are still common today, in newspapers, courts, publishing houses and different kinds of offices, but perhaps it’s not quite as common as it used to be during the forties. The name “typists” comes from the tool they used – typewriters.
Typewriters today are a collector’s item only to be found in second hand and vintage stores. Today, typists of all kinds use keyboards and computers, but other than that, the idea hasn’t changed much. Compared to other professions on the list, this was one of the best and most well-respected jobs during that time.
