Odd, Obsolete Jobs That Belong in the Past

December 1, 2010 by Sarah Barber

Chimney Sweepers

Chimneys are still a part of our view today, but chimney sweeper is no longer a real occupation, but something we see in periodical films. Throughout the 19th century, chimney sweeper was quite a popular trade, appealing to young boys and adults alike. Despite the low pay, the high demand ensured it was a sought-after profession.

The age of industrialization and urbanization meant that more and more people moved to the cities and could afford houses with chimneys, which in turn raised the demand for Chimney Sweepers. However, the high demand for chimney sweepers couldn’t last forever, and with the rise of the first mechanical sweeper, towards the end of the century, the demand for human chimney sweepers declined.
