Broomsquire
Don’t let the name confuse you – the broomsquires of the 18th and 19th centuries were not people who carried around brooms, but rather the craftsmen who made and sold brooms. Living mostly in rural areas, the broomsquires would collect birch twigs and used them to make the brooms, which they later sold.
Walking around with their brooms on their backs, these people were known as broomsquires. Not only is the broomsquire no longer a profession in our day and age, but the kind of brooms they used to make also belongs to the past. Those were the traditional brooms, made from a collection of twigs tied together on a stick. Today, the broom hairs are mostly made of plastic or corn husks.
