Charlotte Hughes
The first Brit to make it on the list is Charlotte Hughes. She holds the record as Britain’s longest living person. At her death on 17 March 1993, she was the second-oldest living person in the world and also the last verified person born in 1877. She passed away at the age of 115 years, 228 days. Charlotte was born in Hartlepool and she grew up in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire.
At 13 years old she started working as an English teacher until the age of 63. Soon after she married Noel Hughes, a man who was 15 years her junior. At age 107 she received a visit from none other than Queen Elizabeth II. On her 108th she got an invite to have lunch with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher although Hughes was a supporter of the opposing party. She attributed her longevity to following the ten commandments and a healthy diet.
