Maria do Couto Maia-Lopes
Maria was born in October 1890 and she died in July 2005, in Porto District, Portugal, at the age of 114 years, 274 days. She was validated as the oldest person from Portugal until 2008 (when she was surpassed by Maria de Jesus) moreover, she was also the second oldest person living in Europe. Her husband passed away in 1946 and together they had eight daughters – only three were alive when she died.
She possessed strong memory skills as she was able to recall the day the last King of Portugal (D. Manuel II) visited a town nearby. In 2002, she had an accident with boiling water, which left her bedridden, but healthy nonetheless as she was able to continue with life with no medication and a good appetite.
