A million votes for President doesn’t exactly sound like unrecognized. In fact, getting a million votes for anything is a lifetime achievement; even getting a million votes to be evicted from the Big Brother house is a recipe for instant fame. Imagine doing that while sitting in a prison cell.

If you were wondering what he was in prison for, that would be his outspoken activism against American participation in the First World War and encouragement of draft evasion. While he may not have won the Presidency, at least he was released from prison a year later, only to be admitted to a Sanitarium in the other five.
