Queen Elizabeth II, Serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, 1945
Many people sacrificed a lot during WWII, including royalty. We’re so used to seeing Queen Elizabeth II; may she rest in peace, in bright hats and dresses that most of us would never imagine her dressed in a military uniform. But here’s a snapshot of the young future Queen serving her country.
The young Queen-to-be stands leaning against a military vehicle in 1945, only 18 or 19 years old. She served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, which was the women’s branch of Britain’s army at the time. During her time in the ATS, she drove and repaired heavy vehicles. Impressive!
