I can’t figure out exactly what it is that is going on here, and I may never manage to. Please let me know if you come up with any good explanations for the particular configuration pictured here. What is for sure that is that whether or not we can explain it, it is quite a powerful image.

What I can tell you is that this photo was taken in the town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas in 1880… and based on the signs, I can tell you that this was a town with multiple grocery stores. I’m not sure why the residents of the town decided to pose for this photo but I’m sure glad that they did.
