So, What’s the Plan?
If a potential employer asks if you plan on having kids, become suspicious. According to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, it is technically not illegal to ask someone if they are or plan to become pregnant. However, the Commission strongly discourages it because it can lead to discriminatory hiring.
Just remember that if an interviewer asks you this intrusive, personal question, you don’t have to answer. You’re not legally obligated to tell an employer about your family planning. Furthermore, an employer can’t treat you differently if you are pregnant. According to the EEOC, “employers must permit pregnant employees to work as long as they are able to perform their jobs.” So, if you feel like you are being judged in an interview, run the other way.
