Work That 9 to 5
As Dolly Parton sings in 9 to 5, “it’s all takin’ and no givin’” when it comes to toxic workplaces. It’s a major red flag if a company expects you to work more for no extra pay. They can communicate this in various different ways, like trying to make you feel bad for not taking on that extra project or getting mad when you leave right at 5 pm.
Unfortunately, this kind of pressure happens way more than it should, and it’s sometimes unavoidable. A lot of companies try to put a positive spin on this pressure to overwork yourself by saying it shows how “committed” you are to the company. It’s important to have a work-life balance, so it’s important to draw boundaries and stick with them. If your shift technically ends at five, leave at five. If they don’t like it, they’re not worth it.
