Catherine the Great Really Didn’t Like Her Husband
Catherine the Great is Russia’s longest-ruling female ruler – and she wasn’t even meant for the role. Catherine, who was a Prussian princess, married the future Tsar Peter III when they were both teenagers. Peter was not a great husband. As their marriage progressed, Peter’s drinking and mental health spiraled, unchecked, and Catherine bore the brunt of it.
He went through phases of ignoring and trolling her. Catherine was patiently watching and waiting, though. She eventually led a successful coup against her own husband with the help of the Imperial Guard and Orthodox Church. She became Empress, held Peter in captivity until he passed away, and ruled Russia for 34 years.
