Dislike at First Sight
Here we have another example of an arranged marriage that absolutely did not end happily ever after. King George III’s son, also named George, was betrothed to Caroline of Brunswick. They had only seen each other through flattering portraits, so when they met in real life they were both pretty disappointed. George took it a little harder than Caroline, though.
He thought Caroline was unattractive and had poor hygiene, while Caroline remarked that George wasn’t as handsome as his portrait. Ouch. George was so distraught about the marriage that he supposedly arrived late and intoxicated to his own ceremony. The two had to marry under orders of the king, and they remained unhappily married and estranged for around 30 years. Caroline’s tombstone, pictured bottom right, reads, “Here lies Caroline, the injured Queen of England.”
