Wedding Night Nerves
China was a monarchy until just about a century ago. Puyi, born 1906 and crowned emperor at age two, was the last monarch to rule China. When Puyi was 16, it was determined that he should marry, so he chose Wanrong out of a series of photos of prominent, eligible aristocrats. They were married in an opulent ceremony in 1922.
It seems that Puyi got cold feet when it came to the wedding night, however. After Puyi and Wanrong retired to their royal chambers, he apparently panicked and left the room. His inexperience and sensory overload from the ceremony may have made him too nervous to go through with the evening.
