King George I had an arranged marriage with his first cousin, Sophia Dorothea of Celle, and it was not a pleasant one. Arranged royal marriages with relatives were pretty common back in the 1700s when George I reigned. It was not common, however, for royal wives to enjoy the same standards of behavior as their husbands. Sophia Dorothea, a German noblewoman, experienced this first hand.
King George I was constantly unfaithful in his marriage. He had multiple mistresses and made no secret about his infidelity. When Sophia understandably tried to do the same and began an affair with a Swedish count, George lost it. The count mysteriously disappeared and George divorced Sophia. She was only 28 years old at the time and spent the rest of her life imprisoned for her infidelity. George experienced no such punishment for his affairs.
