Down in the Dumps
There are several stories in the history books about royals being petty, but this story is just plain rude. King Christian VII of Denmark was married to Princess Caroline Matilda, the sister of King George III of England. Just because they were married doesn’t mean they loved each other. In fact, Christian swore he’d never love his wife.
As if to really drive his point home, he had a portrait of her hung in one of the royal bathrooms. It should be noted that King Christian lived with untreated mental illness and suffered from hallucinations and paranoia. We’re not sure how much that played into the treatment of his wife, who was exiled for having an affair with a palace doctor.
