A Tragic Legend
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s relationship has been remembered as one of history’s greatest love stories. They spent 21 years together and were only separated upon Albert’s death. The same can’t be said for Prince Albert’s parents, though. Princess Louise and Ernst I were both unfaithful in their marriage, and didn’t seem all that happy with each other.
They eventually divorced, but tragedy struck Princess Louise when she decided to secretly marry a former lover. Princess Louise was already living apart from her two sons, Albert and Ernst, but she lost her sons for good when this second marriage was discovered. Although she officially never saw them again, there’s a heartbreaking legend that Louise dressed up as a peasant to watch her sons from a crowd. Albert always held fond memories of his mother, who passed away when she was only 30.
