Can’t Stop Love… Unless You’re the Queen
Humans have always loved scandals and stories of secret love. That’s why the story of Lady Mary Grey is still appealing and tragic to us 500 years later. Mary was Queen Elizabeth I’s cousin and was in line for the throne since Elizabeth didn’t have any children of her own. Because of this, Mary and her sister Katherine could not marry anyone without the queen’s blessing.
This rule didn’t stop Mary, though. At 19, she fell in love with Thomas Keyes, a 6-foot tall 40-year-old widower, and they got married in a secret ceremony. They lived happily ever after until Queen Elizabeth found out. Elizabeth placed Mary under house arrest, imprisoned Keyes, and the two lovers never saw each other again.
