Harper Lee
Harper Lee, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the renowned ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ did not have children or marry throughout her almost nine-decade life, like the other female authors on our list. She was born in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926, the youngest of four children, and went to Montgomery to attend an all-female college. Most people don’t know that Lee had only written one book between the mid-’50s and 2015, before writing “Go Set a Watchman” as a spiritual sequel for her popular “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
Marja Mills, Lee’s former neighbour and friend, authored “The Mockingbird Next Door: Life with Harper Lee,” a biography of the author. She revealed in her book that Lee had a number of successful relationships with men, but none of them had ever progressed to the point of marriage. Perhaps Harper, like so many others, was just too far ahead of her time in her views and thoughts for any man to manage.
