#45: Enter at Your Own Risk
Providing another severe case of pareidolia, I can’t decide if this building gives off benevolent or malevolent vibes. For one, it looks like it might offer great hugs, but also as if that hug might never stop. This church, the Hallgrimskirkja, can be found in Reykjavik, Iceland. It took 43 years to build and eventually opened in 1986.
The architect, Guðjón Samúelsson, is exalted as the first architect ever to be taught in Iceland. He also designed both the University of Iceland and the National Theater of Iceland. He died 33 years before the church was completed. If you’re unfamiliar, the style is called “Expressionistic Neo-Gothic” and was popular in the late 1700s.
