#13: A Bridge to Hell?
So, we’ve seen the Stairway to Heaven, and now we present you with the Bridge to Hell. Okay, so Latvia isn’t hell and this isn’t the official name of the bridge, but this imposing structure might have some people confused. This is the Valmiera Bridge in Valmiera, Latvia. It bridges each side of Valmiera over the Gauja River and was built in 2011. In the proper lighting, it’s rather pretty, but a misty day can quickly make it seem like the route to hell.
At 144 meters long, it provides a safe passage for pedestrians, vehicles, and bicyclists to get from one half of the town to the other. It replaced an older version that was deemed unsafe after standing for over a century and could no longer support the influx of traffic. It also provides telecommunication links for the town.
