Held hostage
Did you know that every time a sovereign attends the Palace, a member of the house of commons must be held at Buckingham Palace to ensure their safe return after? This goes all the way back to the time when Kings and Queens had real power in England. It seemed as though they didn’t always trust each other.
To be exact, in 1649, there was a war between the monarchy and the parliament for power, and before its conclusion, they had this arrangement made between them as a sort of peace treaty. Now it’s more of a ceremonial gesture and a symbol of deep British heritage and history between the two pillars of society.
