A Real Life Hero
The Fault in Our Stars is a hit young adult novel by John Green turned into a Hollywood blockbuster, and the person who motivated Green to finish the book is truly inspiring. The main character, Hazel Lancaster, is largely inspired by Esther Earl, who was a teenager fighting the same disease. She inspired so many with her activism and her YouTube videos, including John Green.
The two struck up a friendship before she passed away, and Green openly dedicated The Fault in Our Stars to Esther when it came out in 2012. When the movie adaptation came out in 2014, Esther’s parents said that she would have loved the movie and probably would have watched it multiple times with her friends. We think it’s a beautiful way to keep Esther’s memory alive.
