#27: The Muffin Man, London, England, 1910
We all know the popular children’s song about the muffin man on Drury Lane, but most of us don’t stop thinking how this song may have been based on a person’s profession. Although we don’t know the true origin of the popular nursery rhyme, it was first written in 1820 and has lived on ever since. This photo is proof that the Muffin Man song is more than just a silly rhyme.
This man is pictured carrying his freshly baked muffins around the neighborhood on top of his head. Taken in 1910 London, it was common for muffin men to travel door to door selling their baked goods as treats for children and adults alike. Back in the day, you didn’t have to go out to get your breakfast muffin. The muffins came to you.
