Roberto Clemente – 1955 Topps
Roberto Clemente was a legendary Rightfielder who spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won 12 Golden Glove Awards, four Batting Championships, 15 All-Star Games, and two World Series titles during his illustrious career. On his way to Nicaragua to aid in earthquake relief, “The Great One,” as he was known, died in a plane accident after reaching 3,000 hits.
“He played a kind of baseball that no one had seen before,” said former New Yorker writer and MLB Network host Bill Simmons of Clemente. This 1955 Topps rookie card has been sought after because of Clemente’s death. In 2016, a grade 9 card went for $478,800.
